6/1/2010: PDL Qualification Wrap Up & Orange Legion News

** The Dayton Dutch Lions were one of eight PDL teams to qualify over the weekend for the U.S. Open Cup. Here's a nice article on every division's qualification written by Tavio Palazzolo (who I texted results and some good natured trash talk to back and forth on Saturday between our game and the Michigan Bucks, since Tavio is a Bucks follower).

As the Dutch Lions prepare for the next round, it is most likely that if the Dayton Dutch Lions draw another PDL team in the U.S. Open Cup then it will be the winner of the Heartland Division qualification (which is part of the Central Conference with the Great Lakes Division) and that is the Des Moines Menace; As the U.S. Open Cup tries to keep the traveling for the first three rounds as close as possible for opponents.

Therefore, the Dayton Dutch Lions will likely face off against either the closest Amateur, PDL, or USL-2 team that qualified for the U.S. Open Cup in their first round. Then they'll play the closest PDL, USL-2, or USL-1 team in the second round. Then they'll play the closest USL-1 or MLS team in the third round (which may once again be the Columbus Crew). Actually it is quite likely that if the Dayton Dutch Lions win their first two rounds that they might be squaring off again with the Columbus Crew for the U.S. Open Cup. The two teams will likely know each other well by then as the Dayton Dutch Lions will have already played the Columbus Crew in a friendly by then taking place at Bajuan Field on June 19th at 7:30 p.m..

*By the way, I'll have a thorough breakdown of our U.S. Open Cup opponent on here when we find out who it will be.


**The Orange Legion will have their banner making session this Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the usual address, 4123 N. Linda Dr. in Bellbrook, Ohio. We'll likely have beer and maybe pizza if we can get a good crowd out for this one. I want to make something nice as Forest City London will probably be one of our biggest challengers to win the Great Lakes Division along with the Michigan Bucks.

I'll likely have a newsletter out with a couple other things sometime on Wednesday.

**Our banner session will likely be this Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the same place on 4123 N. Linda Drive in Bellbrook, Ohio. MAPQUEST IT! We have some supplies left over from last week, so it shouldn't be too expensive. This week we may put our two banners together and adhere them to make a crowd banner, this is where the crowd actually holds it up and waves it back and forth. Plus we'll also make the two sticks this week. I wanted to last week but I got swamped with finals and etc.

**Chants need to get going, if we have enough people next week which we hopefully will I would like to do a version of the first two chants in this video:

We need at least 50 enthusastic people next week willing to give this a go to make it work. I'll try hard this week without finals to market the section more to get the people in there.

**We will try to get some fliers printed out to hand out this week. I'm just going to make some simple fliers with details on us and then send them out to a few of our members who go to University and have free access to printers. If we print out 50 with 5 to 10 of us and then place them in strategic places like bars where young people hang, Soccer Plus, billboards in Paneras and Borders, University billboards, etc. it may help our membership. Hell, even if it gets us 10-20 more it's worth it.

**We need to get more organized.. We didn't really do much in the way of chants this week because all the people we had the first week were either scared away because of the weather or decided to head to the Crew game in Columbus, Ohio (at the same time) instead.

**I'll likely be able to do much more marketing and trying a lot harder to get more people out this next Saturday. I had three finals last week and car trouble so it was a bad week for me. I want everything to be way more organized.

**We should also look into getting a megaphone for chants.

**We will do MacIntosh's next week definitely, I'm going to go there when my car gets fixed this week to talk to them about deals for Orange Legion supporters.

**Anyways, next week counts for real for the U.S. Open Cup and I want us to show up for real next week. This week was sort of a mulligan for the team and I guess us as well. We need to get more organized.. We didn't really do much in the way of chants this week because all the people we had the first week were either scared away because of the weather or decided to head to the Crew game in Columbus, Ohio (at the same time) instead. It definitely does not help us that were a new group and we have to compete with a 3,000 people section with 4 years headstart on us, 1 hour up the road.

But, hopefully with some better weather and if we hand out some fliers. I'm just going to make some simple fliers with details on us and then send them out to a few of our members who go to University and have free access to printers. If we print out 50 with 5 to 10 of us and then place them in strategic places like bars where young people hang, Soccer Plus, billboards in Paneras and Borders, University billboards, etc. it may help our membership. Derek, the Office Manager, told me our section was going to have 4 Dutch pilots who were part of that Dutch Air Force video there and 20-30 guys who live in Bellbrook and play in a Rec League were going to join. But, both opted out because of the chilly weather. If they would've came we would've had 50 or so last night.

Also, some of my best guys, the drummers, were either gone watching the Crew or had other matters they needed to deal with. Both will hopefully be back next week, although there also is a Crew game we have to contend with next week as well.

5/10/2010: Dutch Lions Opener Does Not Count Towards U.S. Open Cup Qualification

Julius Wille put the Lions up 2-0 halfway through the first half, at that point the Dutch Lions must have thought they were on their way to a route. But, scrappy Cincinnati battled back (Picture by Jacq Roos).

The Dutch Lions entertained in a beautiful tie, but as Head Coach Sonny Silooy stated pre-game to The Orange Legionnaire I rather have "an ugly win." Luckily, the Dutch Lions got a mulligan for the Open Cup, as next week's Cleveland Internationals game will be the first one to count instead.

That's according the TheCup.US, who do not have last night's Dayton Dutch Lions home opener against the Cincinnati Kings highlighted as a fixture that will count for U.S. Open Cup qualification. Instead the following games will count (Dutch Lions games highlighted in bold):

The Dutch Lions will welcome this news as they dropped 2-0 and 3-1 leads late as the Cincinnati Kings scored all three of their goals in the last 17 minutes of the game. There was obvious frustration from the Dutch Lion players after the game, all of them are great competitors and did not take the defensive breakdown at the end all too well.

The Dutch Lions deserved more from last night's game as they had about 70% percent of the possession and each of their shots were good opportunities. In comparison, I counted about four good opportunities for the Cincinnati Kings all game and kudos to them for converting on three of those four near the end of last night's game.

I'll have more of a breakdown on yesterday's game early tomorrow, as well as a breakdown of what's going on in The Orange Legion this week; As I'm looking to make twice the ammount of banners and get some guerilla marketing around Dayton going, to hopefully build our group up more for a very important game this next weekend. I want to get the people in there, I want to go to MacIntosh's before this week, and I want to hand out some fliers. I want to get things more organized. So if I aim high on tasks, hopefully I can hit half of them or more (especially since I have no finals or hopefully no car trouble this week) so I should have more time to get everything done to get better support over there.

5/5/2010: Second Banner Making Session Sneak Peek

The above are some low quality pictures (snapped with my cellphone) of the banners we made last night at The Orange Legion's weekly banner making session. We'll have some high-quality pictures up likely later tonight, I'm just waiting on them to be sent to my email.

The banners for this week are the same size of last week's banners. We'll also make four or five two sticks Thursday afternoon. This brings our total to four large banners and four or five two sticks for the Kings game.

The first banner above is a Dutch Lion orientated banner and the second banner is a Anti-Cincinnati Kings banner, with as you can sort of make out the King from the Burger King commercials.
